What is a French accent test?

A French accent test estimates how close your spoken French is to recordings of native French speakers. It does not grade your grammar or vocabulary. It only listens to your voice. You get one accent strength score from 0 to 100. A lower score means your recording is closer to the native reference.

It is not a French level test. Someone with fluent French can still have a strong accent, and a beginner can sound quite native when reading a short text. To check single French words, use the French pronunciation test.

How the accent test works

  1. Record two short tasks

First you read one short French paragraph aloud, then you talk freely in French for about 30 seconds. This captures both your careful and your natural speech.

  2. AI compares it with native speech

A speech model turns your recordings into speech features. A second model, trained on recordings of native speakers and learners, estimates how close your speech is to native speech.

  3. Get your score instantly

You get a 0-100 accent strength score, a band (faint, mild, moderate or strong), your native similarity percentage and a result card you can share.

What your accent score means

Your result is a number from 0 to 100 plus a band. A low score means the model rates your recording as close to its native reference recordings, and a high score means it finds a large difference. Here are the four bands.

BandScoreWhat it means
Faint0–24The model rates your recording as very close to its native reference recordings.
Mild25–49The model rates your recording as fairly close to its native reference recordings, with a light difference.
Moderate50–74The model finds a clear difference between your recording and its native reference recordings.
Strong75–100The model finds a large difference between your recording and its native reference recordings.

An accent is not a mistake, and a higher score is not a failing grade. The score is the model's estimate of how close your recording is to native reference recordings. On its own, it does not show your level or how well people understand you.

How we measure your accent

When you finish, a speech recognition model (Whisper) turns about a minute of your recordings into speech features. A small model trained on public recordings of native speakers and of learners (Mozilla Common Voice) then estimates how close your speech is to native speech. That estimate becomes your 0 to 100 accent strength score. Native similarity is the other side of the same measurement.

What the test can't tell you

  • It measures how strong your accent is, not which accent you have. It does not name your first language.
  • Your microphone and room affect the result. Noise, echo or a very quiet voice can push the score up, so it can move a few points between attempts.
  • We checked the model offline on read speech from public recordings. Learners with some first languages, Turkish for example, were rare or missing in that data, so treat your score as an estimate.
  • It assumes you read and speak in the language of the test. A recording in another language does not give a meaningful score.

How to get the most accurate result

  • Find a quiet room

Turn off music, the TV and fans, and avoid rooms with a strong echo. Background noise is the most common reason for an unfairly high score.

  • Use a decent microphone

Earphones with a built-in mic, or your phone held about 20 cm from your mouth, work well. Don't cover the microphone or speak from across the room.

  • Speak at your natural pace

Don't rush the reading passage or try to perform. Read it the way you would read to a colleague. Clear speech matters more than speed.

  • Keep talking for the full 30 seconds

In the free speaking task, pick an easy topic like your weekend or a hobby and keep talking. More natural speech gives the AI more to work with.

Accent vs pronunciation: what's the difference?

Your accent is the overall sound of your speech: the melody, rhythm and vowel quality you bring from your first language. Pronunciation is narrower. It is about saying single sounds and words correctly.

You can have a noticeable accent and still pronounce every word clearly. Most misunderstandings come from a few specific words and sounds, not from the accent itself. That is why it makes sense to test them separately.

Frequently asked questions

How does this accent test work?

You read a short paragraph aloud, then talk freely for about 30 seconds. A speech model turns your recordings into speech features, and a model trained on native speakers and learners estimates how strong your accent is. You get a score from 0 to 100 and a band.

Is the test free?

Yes. The test is free and takes about two minutes. You do not need an account to see your score.

What happens to my recording?

We use your recording to create your result and to improve Flalingo's accent technology. We only process it after you give clear consent, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.

What does my score mean?

A low score means the model rates your recording as close to its native reference recordings, and a high score means it finds a large difference. An accent is not a mistake. The score does not show your level or how well people understand you.

How accurate is the test?

In an offline check on public recordings, the model told native speakers and learners apart well. That check used read speech only, and learners with some first languages, Turkish for example, were rare or missing in it. Treat your score as an estimate: test in the same quiet place and compare results over weeks, not minutes.
