1. Set the relationship and the practical goal
You are a visitor at an imaginary art fair. A seller has postcard designs showing a tree and a house. Your goal is to request two postcards of the chosen design and check that the seller understood the quantity. There is no real price, stock or venue claim in this exercise.
Use complete polite expressions while you learn. Korean sentence endings contribute to how you address someone; deleting an ending because you remember only the first part can change the tone of the exchange. This small phrase set is a starting point, not a complete account of honorifics or social relationships.
Prepare two picture cards and a few pieces of paper to represent postcards. You and a partner can practise without buying anything. Agree which speaker is the visitor and which is the seller. Keep the intended quantity hidden from the seller until the visitor asks.
2. Greet and get attention before making the request
Begin with 안녕하세요, a common polite greeting. If the seller is looking away or helping someone else, wait for a suitable moment. 저기요 can get attention before a question or request. It is not a translation of every English excuse me, and repeating it loudly is not the point of the exercise.
Innovative Language Learning's Korean learning notes teach 저기요 as an attention-getting expression and distinguish it from requests for repetition. Keep those functions separate in your practice: first establish that the person is listening, then say what you need.
Point to the chosen design and use 이거, this, when the object is clear to both speakers. A pointing gesture can support a beginner's language, but it should not replace the quantity. The seller still needs to hear whether you want one card or two.
3. Request the item and quantity as one unit
엽서 두 장 주세요 means two postcards, please. 엽서 names the item; 두 장 gives the quantity with a counter used for flat sheets or cards; 주세요 completes the request. Practise the whole expression rather than treating 주세요 as a word that can be attached to any English sentence.
To choose the design by pointing, you can say 이거 두 장 주세요. Keep the object visible while you practise. If both designs are in front of you, point clearly to one so the seller is not forced to guess whether you mean two identical cards or one of each.
Then change the quantity to one: 한 장 주세요. The form changes from 하나 to 한 before this counter, and from 둘 to 두. Learn the small request as a checked chunk before adding other counters. A count of people, bottles or books may need a different expression.
| Purpose | Korean expression | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Greet the seller | 안녕하세요. | Hello, in a polite exchange. |
| Attract attention | 저기요. | Excuse me, before a question or request. |
| Request two selected postcards | 이거 두 장 주세요. | Two of this card, please. |
| Check the quantity | 두 장이요? | Two cards, checking what was heard. |
| Correct it to one | 아니요, 한 장 주세요. | No, one card, please. |
| Thank the seller | 감사합니다. | Thank you. |
4. Prepare for a confirmation or a correction
The seller may repeat the quantity as a question: 두 장이요? If that is what you intended, 네, 두 장이요 confirms it. If the seller heard one when you meant two, answer with a clear correction that includes the number. A vague nod can leave the misunderstanding in place.
Ask your partner to alternate between the correct and incorrect quantity during practice. They should not change the design and quantity at the same time in the first round. One changing detail makes it easier to recognise whether you are responding to meaning or automatically saying yes.
After the reply, count the paper postcards together. Does the number match the visitor's initial card? This simple physical check shows whether the exchange worked. It is a more precise result than deciding that the dialogue sounded smooth.
5. Ask for slower speech when the answer is unclear
천천히 말해 주세요 asks someone to speak slowly. 다시 말해 주세요 asks them to say it again. Use the first when you need the pace adjusted and the second when you missed the message. You can begin with 죄송합니다 if an apology fits the interruption, but the repair request itself should remain clear.
Innovative Language Learning's phrase lesson gives slower-speech and repetition expressions in a comprehension problem. Our postcard task changes the situation and the information you need. Do not copy a full source dialogue or assume the other person will respond with the same words as a recording.
If the seller's repeat is still unclear, point to one or two cards and check the quantity again. A beginner conversation can use speech and visible information together. Avoid claiming you understood merely to finish the exercise. Your next action should agree with the answer you actually received.
6. Preserve the phrase ending and the intended number
Record 이거 두 장 주세요 and listen for the request's ending. If you trail off before 주세요, rehearse the final part and attach it to the item phrase again. Keep the number clear without shouting it or separating every syllable with a pause.
Romanisations such as juseyo or cheoncheonhi are supporting labels, not English spelling instructions. The National Institute's Romanisation rules show that transcription has conventions of its own. Use Hangul and Korean audio to check the complete expression.
Regional speech and individual delivery vary. Choose a clear learning model first, then practise recognising another speaker's version. The task is not to declare one person's accent the only acceptable form; it is to understand the request and response reliably.

7. End the exchange with the right farewell
After the request is settled, 감사합니다 provides a polite thank-you. If you leave the stall while the seller remains, 안녕히 계세요 is a useful farewell. A person addressing someone who is leaving can say 안녕히 가세요. Learn the ordinary stay-or-go distinction in this clear setting first.
The National Institute's dictionary entry for 안녕히 lists these greeting expressions. Context still matters; not every real-life departure fits a simple diagram. For this practice, the seller stays at the stall and the visitor leaves, so each role has a clear choice.
Reverse the roles and practise the closing again. Do not use the farewell as an unrelated final line read from a card. It should occur after the quantity is confirmed and the interaction is ready to end.
8. Review the communication before the score
Ask your partner what design and quantity they understood. If either is wrong, identify the exact turn that caused confusion. Was the design unclear, the number misheard or the confirmation ignored? Choose one correction and run a new round with a different quantity.
The Korean pronunciation test can provide word accuracy, fluency and completeness feedback on a reading sample. It cannot determine whether your request was socially appropriate, whether the seller consented to anything or whether you used a particular phoneme correctly. It is not a CEFR assessment or certificate.
Keep a small record of one expression you can now use and one reply you still need to recognise. Next time, add a modest variation, such as asking for a different design. You do not need a long shopping vocabulary to practise a complete, responsive exchange.

Is 주세요 the same as English please?
It appears in useful requests, including asking for an item, but it is not a universal standalone translation. Learn the whole request and check the verb form when asking someone to do an action. Context and delivery also affect politeness.
Can I remove 요 to sound more natural?
Do not remove endings at random. A different ending can change the speech level and relationship implied. Keep the complete polite expressions in this beginner task; learn casual forms separately with guidance about when to use them.
Should I say yes when I only caught part of the reply?
Clarify the missing detail instead. You can ask for slower speech or repetition and repeat the quantity you think you heard. In the postcard exercise, the final number of cards should match your intention.
Which goodbye should I use when I leave a shop?
In the straightforward situation where you leave and the other person stays, 안녕히 계세요 addresses the person staying. 안녕히 가세요 addresses the person leaving. More complex departure situations can depend on context, so avoid treating the simple rule as exhaustive.
