What is a pronunciation test?
A pronunciation test measures how accurately you produce English sounds, stress and rhythm. An accent test looks at your voice as a whole. A pronunciation test checks specific words and sounds against a reference, so you can see which ones make you harder to understand.
Flalingo's free pronunciation checker uses the same kind of speech-assessment technology found in language apps and exams. It scores each sound from 0 to 100 and groups your mistakes into sound families, so you spend your practice time on the few changes that matter most.
How the pronunciation test works

Each sentence targets the English sounds learners find hardest: TH, V/W, R/L, the sheep/ship vowels and word stress. You can also type any word or sentence you want to check.
AI scores every sound
A speech-assessment model compares each sound you make with native English pronunciation. It scores accuracy, fluency, completeness and intonation from 0 to 100.

Pronunciation test vs accent test
Your accent is the overall 'colour' of your English. Pronunciation is whether each sound and stress comes out clearly. You can have a noticeable accent and still pronounce words very well. Use this test to fix specific sounds, and the free AI accent test to see how strong your accent is overall.
Tips for an accurate score
- Find a quiet room and hold your phone or microphone 15–30 cm from your mouth.
- Read at your normal speed. Don't over-pronounce or slow down on purpose.
- Read the whole sentence. Skipped words lower your completeness and accuracy scores.
- After practising a sound, record the sentence again to see your progress straight away.

Frequently asked questions
Is the pronunciation test free?
Yes. The test and the word checker are free and you don't need an account. To keep it free for everyone, each visitor can run up to 40 checks a day.
How does the AI score my pronunciation?
The AI compares your recording with the text you read. A speech-assessment model lines up each word and sound, then scores four things: how close each sound is to native English (accuracy), how smoothly you speak (fluency), how much of the text you said (completeness) and your stress and melody (intonation).
Which English accent is the pronunciation checker based on?
Scores use a General American English model. If you speak British English or another variety, some vowels may score a little lower even when they are correct for your accent. Pay most attention to consonants, stress and sounds that get flagged in several sentences.
What is a good pronunciation score?
A score above 75 means you are easy to understand, and above 90 is excellent. Most learners improve fastest by fixing their two or three weakest sounds rather than chasing a perfect overall score.
Can I check how to pronounce a specific word?
Yes. Switch to 'Check a word or sentence' and type any English word or phrase up to 160 characters. Tap 'Hear it' to listen, then record yourself and see how each sound scored.
Do you store my voice?
No. Your recording is sent securely to the speech-assessment service to calculate your score, and Flalingo does not store it. We only keep anonymous usage counts to apply the daily limit.
How can I improve my English pronunciation fast?
Pick your three weakest sounds and practise them for 10 minutes a day with minimal pairs and short sentences. Record yourself and retake the test every week. Daily speaking practice with feedback, for example in the Flalingo app, helps the new sounds become automatic.
