Online spoken English courses in India: compare fees and speaking time
Compare the complete payable amount and the live teaching minutes you can actually use. A monthly fee, a trial price and a headline number of learning hours describe different things. For spoken English, also inspect how often you speak, receive feedback and attempt the task again.
Read published prices without turning them into a market average
On 27 September 2026, WizMantra's own fee page listed its Basic English Speaking course at ₹4,890 for one month and a paid demo at ₹299. These are that provider's advertised figures. The page's claims about competitors and better outcomes are not independent evidence, and we do not use them to rank courses.
The British Council's myEnglish general page displayed a six-week programme, 50 learning hours and a starting price of ₹9,500. That headline does not by itself establish 50 hours of live teacher contact or a currently bookable batch. Confirm the live/self-study breakdown, intake and final quote before making an hourly comparison.
Clapingo's booking page describes one-to-one online sessions and says subscription pricing is personalised. Its trial promotion is not the subscription price. Request the full proposed plan, session duration and total commitment; do not multiply a promotional trial amount to estimate a month.
These examples show three different pricing presentations, not the cheapest-to-most-expensive order. Public pages can retain old products or change promotions. Keep the date of your quote and compare the specific package you can purchase, rather than whichever headline looks most attractive.
Separate live lessons, independent practice and access
A course may include live teaching, recordings, an exercise library, AI practice, group webinars and a certificate. Each may be useful, but adding all of their hours together can hide what you are buying for your immediate goal. If you need to respond spontaneously on calls, establish how much supported conversation the package provides.
The British Council's current English Online overview describes small-group or individual classes, a monthly model and additional AI speaking activities. That is a different product description from the myEnglish page above. Do not combine one product's price with another product's features.
Ask for the number of live sessions and minutes per session in writing. Then ask whether a credit always buys the same length and format. A short private lesson and a longer group class may use credits differently. Treat independent practice as a separate benefit rather than silently counting it as teacher time.
| Price component | Information to request | How to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| Live group lessons | Sessions, minutes, class size and task format | Calculate class hours; inspect actual opportunities to speak |
| Private lessons | Session duration, tutor arrangement and booking limits | Calculate live hours and review feedback quality |
| Self-study or AI access | Access period and activities included | Assess usefulness separately from live teaching |
| Trial or consultation | Duration, teaching content and later commitment | Treat as an evaluation cost, not the normal lesson rate |
| Registration or materials | Mandatory charges and tax treatment | Include in the total payable quote |
Compare two fictional offers using the same units
Consider two invented offers, not prices from the providers above. Plan A costs ₹3,600 for twelve 30-minute private lessons. Plan B costs ₹4,800 for sixteen 45-minute group lessons. Assume these quoted totals already include every required charge. Plan A supplies six live hours, so its scheduled cost is ₹600 per hour. Plan B supplies twelve live class hours, or ₹400 per hour.
That arithmetic does not prove Plan B gives more individual speaking practice. Group work may offer useful interaction, but you need to see how it is organised. A well-run pair task differs from waiting while each person gives a short answer to the teacher. Equally, a private lesson can contain substantial teacher explanation. The advertised format alone does not tell you how the minutes are used.
Now account for your timetable. If you attend nine Plan A lessons with no recovery for the other three, you use 4.5 hours and pay ₹800 per attended hour. If you attend twelve Plan B lessons, you use nine hours and pay about ₹533.33 per attended class hour. These figures reveal the cost of unused sessions; they still do not measure learning quality.
Use the course-cost calculator with your own written quote. Keep scheduled hours and realistically usable hours visible. If the provider can move a session without losing credit, apply its actual rules rather than assuming every absence is lost or every missed lesson is recoverable.
Use the trial to test feedback, not just friendliness
Bring a small speaking task to a trial. For example, explain a fictional mix-up with a meeting invitation: the message shows Tuesday, but the calendar entry shows Thursday, and you need to confirm the correct day before arranging your work. Ask the teacher to play the recipient and introduce a follow-up question.
Notice whether the teacher lets you finish, checks the meaning and chooses a useful correction. Then repeat the exchange with changed details. A second attempt shows whether the feedback helps you communicate more clearly. You do not need a dramatic transformation in one lesson; you need evidence of how teaching works.
Afterwards, write down what you actually did: asked a clarification question, corrected a misunderstanding, or summarised the agreed date. Compare this with a trial dominated by introductions or a sales presentation. If your regular teacher, group size or session length will differ from the trial, ask how representative the demonstration is.
Read the commitment behind the monthly label
A monthly equivalent can describe a subscription billed each month or a longer package paid upfront. Ask which applies. Record the amount charged now, future charges, renewal date, expiry of unused lessons and any minimum commitment. An instalment is a payment schedule; it does not automatically mean you can stop after one month without further obligations.
Check rescheduling in both directions: what happens if you cancel, and what happens if the tutor or platform cancels? Ask about booking windows, tutor availability at your preferred Indian Standard Time slot and whether unused credits carry forward. A flexible timetable has little practical value if the sessions you can attend are consistently unavailable.
Request an itemised payable quote, including applicable taxes and mandatory extras, instead of assuming the headline is the checkout total. For a non-INR quote, check the actual INR amount and payment charges before confirming. Keep the provider's current written terms with the quote; a general comparison article cannot establish your individual contract.
Design a budget that survives an ordinary week
Choose two realistic lesson windows and one backup before choosing the longest package. Include time to prepare and repeat corrections between lessons. If you share a room or device, account for when you can speak aloud. A lower price per scheduled hour can be poor value if the timetable makes attendance unlikely.
Suppose your monthly learning budget is ₹5,000. You do not have to spend all of it on the largest lesson bundle. You might choose a smaller supported commitment and use free reading or listening resources between sessions. This is a budgeting approach, not a recommendation of a particular product or a claim about how quickly you will improve.
For shift workers or learners with changing responsibilities, compare the price difference against the terms for pausing, rescheduling or buying a shorter period. Pay for flexibility only if the written arrangement solves your actual scheduling problem.
Review the first month before renewing
At the start, record a short response to an unfamiliar but manageable prompt. Choose one target, such as asking a useful follow-up question. After each lesson, keep one correction and use it in a new example. This takes the focus away from collecting large vocabulary lists that never appear in conversation.
In the final week, attempt a comparable new prompt. Check whether you can complete the task more independently, respond to a change and repair a misunderstanding. Ask the teacher to explain the next learning priority using examples from your work. Attendance and completed videos are useful records, but they are not sufficient evidence of improved speaking.
Renew when the teaching method, timetable and observed progress justify the next commitment. If the fit is poor, first identify the cause: unsuitable level, insufficient interaction, missed sessions or unclear goals. Buying a longer version of the same arrangement may leave that problem unchanged.
Send a precise enquiry before paying
Use this enquiry in your own words: 'I need live speaking practice at my current level. Please confirm the total payable amount, session count and duration, group size or private format, expiry, booking availability and cancellation rules. How will I receive feedback and practise the correction again?' Add your preferred time window and one practical speaking goal.

No price in this guide is a national average, a guaranteed current checkout amount or evidence that one provider produces better results.
Flalingo · Use one currency for both options
Compare the real cost of two courses
Use quotes in the same currency and include every mandatory fee. Compare the same booking period. These are your figures, not market prices.
Use no thousands separators and at most two decimal places. Example: 1234.56
Teaching hours exclude travel, breaks and homework. A lower hourly price does not measure teaching quality or individual speaking time.
Questions, answered
Can I divide the fee by the advertised course hours?
Only after establishing what those hours include. Total learning time may combine live lessons and independent activities. For teacher-contact comparisons, use confirmed live minutes; for your budget, also calculate the hours you realistically expect to attend.
Is one-to-one always better value for spoken English?
No. It can offer focused attention, while a suitable group can provide useful interaction with different speakers. Observe how a lesson works, whether your level fits and whether you get relevant feedback followed by another attempt.
Does a low trial fee tell me the subscription will be affordable?
No. Treat the trial and subscription as separate purchases. Obtain the full plan price and terms before committing, and check whether any promotional amount has conditions or differs from the later billing arrangement.
What should I do if a provider will not publish its price?
Request a written quote for a precisely defined package. You can still compare it once the total charge, live minutes, format and conditions are clear. Avoid calculating an hourly rate from incomplete information or another provider's description.
