The hardest Portuguese sounds for learners
Nasal vowels and ão
Brazilian Portuguese has nasal vowels, marked with ã or õ, or by an m or n after the vowel: lã, som, sim. The famous -ão starts with a nasal 'uh' and glides to a nasal 'w' (pão, não, João). Let the air flow through your nose and don't close the sound with a full n or m.
T and D before i
In most of Brazil, t and d before an i sound turn into 'ch' and 'j' sounds: tia sounds like 'chee-a' and dia like 'jee-a'. This also happens when a final e is said as i: leite sounds like 'lay-chee' and tarde like 'tar-jee'.
The R sounds
At the start of a word and when written rr, most Brazilians say R like a breathy English h (rato, carro, Rio). A single r between vowels is a quick tap of the tongue (caro, para), so carro and caro sound clearly different. At the end of a syllable (porta, mar) the sound depends on the region.
