The hardest Spanish sounds for learners
Tapped R and rolled RR
A single r between vowels is one quick tap of the tongue tip, like the tt in a fast American 'butter' (pero, caro). At the start of a word, after n, l or s, and when written rr, it is a trill of several fast taps (perro, rojo, Enrique). Pero means 'but' and perro means 'dog', so the difference matters.
Five pure vowels
Spanish has five vowels, a, e, i, o and u, and each keeps the same short, clear sound wherever it appears. Don't let them glide the way English vowels do: no is a pure /o/, not 'noh-oo'. Unstressed vowels stay full too, so casa ends in a real a, not 'uh'.
B and V
In Spanish, b and v are the same sound. At the start of a phrase and after m or n it is a full /b/ (vamos, un vaso). Between vowels the lips come close without closing, a soft /β/ (la vaca, lobo), and your teeth never touch your lip.
