You're at a Dublin post office just before closing. You need to send an envelope containing a signed work contract abroad, and the postal clerk is ready to help. Before you can post it, you need to explain where it's going, what's inside and when it must arrive.

A queue, a closing time and an important document can make a simple conversation feel urgent. In this free Speedrun Mission, you have 100 seconds to cover five goals with the clerk. Practise asking for tracking and giving a return address, as well as explaining your deadline clearly.

What you need to say

  1. Say where the envelope is going
    • “It's going to Madrid, Spain.”
    • “Please send it to Paris, France.”
    • “The destination is Lisbon, Portugal.”
  2. Say what's inside
    • “It's a signed work contract.”
    • “There are some documents inside.”
    • “It contains application forms.”
  3. Say when it must arrive
    • “It needs to arrive by Friday.”
    • “The deadline is next week.”
    • “It must get there in two days.”
  4. Ask for tracking
    • “Can I get tracking, please?”
    • “I'd like to send it by tracked post.”
    • “Can you give me a tracking number?”
  5. Give your return address
    • “My return address is 12 River Street, Dublin.”
    • “If it comes back, send it back to 8 Park Road.”
    • “I live at 24 Main Street, Dublin.”

Frequently asked questions

How do I say where I'm sending an envelope in English?

Tell the clerk the destination city and country: "It's going to Madrid, Spain." You can also say, "I'd like to send this to Paris, France." If you don't know how to pronounce a place name, point to the address on the envelope and say it as clearly as you can.

How do I explain what's inside an envelope at the post office?

A short description is enough to begin: "It's a signed work contract" or "There are documents inside." If the clerk asks a follow-up question, answer with the detail you know. You don't need to explain the whole contract; focus on identifying the contents clearly.

How do I ask whether a letter can arrive by a certain date?

Say when you need it to arrive, then ask about the available options: "It needs to arrive by Friday. Is that possible?" This makes the deadline clear without assuming a delivery time. If the clerk suggests a service, you can ask them to repeat its name or estimated arrival date.

How do I ask for tracking and give a return address in English?

Ask, "Can I get tracking, please?" or "Can you give me a tracking number?" For the return address, say, "My return address is..." followed by your address. Speak slowly when giving numbers and street names, and check that the clerk has written them down correctly.
